Width of Viewing Pane in Safari

Service: Hoop.la

Hi, I am hoping you can help with this. All of a sudden, I seem to no longer be able to reduce the width of my viewing pane in Safari (when I try to rescale from the side or corner of the pane, it just adjusts the height). This happens everywhere, but it creates viewing problems on Cookie Connection when zoom out on the site, because the background does not scale with the site and then items on the main nav line lap to a second line. see screen shots. Moreover, it's just a hassle because the width of the viewing pane encompasses my whole screen so I can't easily see and navigate between other open windows. Any idea how to correct this? I've googled around and don't see anything I haven't tried. Thanks.

When zoomed down one level, the background encompasses my full screen and cannot be diminished as I used to be able to do by dragging in the viewing pane.

When I zoom down another level, the main nav line laps and background stays the same width.

Hey Julie,

I went to your site in Safari (v11.1.2) and increased / decreased the size of the browser window without causing any issues with the horizontal nav bar. You mentioned zooming, so I also tried zooming in through the "View" menu in Safari, but that did not reproduce your issue either.

Are you experiencing this on all pages on your site?

What version are you running?

Could you disable any browser plugins you may be using, to ensure that they are not the cause of your problem?

Hopefully we can track down why this is happening on your browser, but not mine.

Cheers,

Jonmark

Yes, experiencing this issue on all site pages and on all sites (not able to shrink horizontally). I am running same version as you, 11.1.2. I never installed any browser plugins (other than Pinterest, which I have always had before this trouble). Not sure where I would uninstall plugins, so need some direction on that. Thanks.

This is as small as I can shrink this pane (see screen shot), which encompasses the full width of my monitor. I don't even get the double-headed arrow when I click on the side to try to shrink the pane.

I'm sorry,

I don't think I understand what you are talking about. What are you trying to shrink, but are unable to? It sounds like you are trying to shrink your browser window, but for some reason cannot grab the edges of the browser.

If that is true, are you having this same issue with other websites, not just Hoop.la Communities?

Any extra details would be much appreciated since I am not seeing any of your issues either here, or on your site with the same version of Safari.

As far as disabling extensions, if you click on the "Safari" menu item, then "Preferences" there should be a "Extensions" tab. Each extension will have a checkbox indicating whether it is enabled or not. Just uncheck them to disable them temporarily for testing purposes.

Cheers,

Jonmark

As noted in my first message (at the very top), I am trying to decrease the width of the viewing pane in Safari. I cannot shrink it to less than my monitor width on any site, but on, Cookie Connection, that fact also seems to be causing some lapping of the main nav line. Not sure how else to describe this.

I just disabled Pinterest, the only extension I had, and no change to anything. Again, trying to decrease viewing pane WIDTH in Safari, so I can see multiple windows open at one time. The width does not shrink - I get double-headed arrow to shrink it, but it shrinks it an imperceptible amount before it stops, and then I don't see the double-headed arrow and can shrink it no more - that's why you see all the large backgrounds behind the sites in my previous screen shots.

Hello Julie,

Thank you for taking the time to explain things again. I know you are frustrated, and I apologize if my questions added to that. I just want to be sure that I understand everything that is happening, especially in cases like this where I'm unable to reproduce a problem from the initial description.

The horizontal navigation should not be made so wide that it wraps. It seems that as you zoom Safari out, the viewport is not scaling at the same rate as the font size, and as a result your horizontal menu is increasing in size relative to the width of the viewport. Hence why it wraps.

If zooming out is important to your community, you will need to try to shrink your menu so that it will not expand beyond the width of the viewport as you zoom.

Regarding your issues not being able to resize your browser window when zoomed, I have not experienced that problem with my installation, and have not heard any similar reports. That really sounds like a browser issue, and not something we can really speak to.

We would recommend not zooming, and just resizing your window to the desired width. The viewport should automatically respond to the width responsively, and things should continue to render well. Hoop.la is meant to work at any width.

Cheers,

Jonmark

Unfortunately, this suggestion, "We would recommend not zooming, and just resizing your window to the desired width. The viewport should automatically respond to the width responsively" doesn't really help, because this is the very crux of the issue I just reported. I CANNOT resize the window to the desired width - that was the point of all of this . . . I'm sorry if I was unclear, but this is the very trouble I reported.

Good morning Julie,

Sorry if it wasn't clear in my response, but this part of what I said was meant to address that browser problem:

Regarding your issues not being able to resize your browser window when zoomed, I have not experienced that problem with my installation, and have not heard any similar reports. That really sounds like a browser issue, and not something we can really speak to.

None of us here are having that problem using the exact same version of Safari. It seems like that is an issue with your instance of Safari. If memory serves, you said you were having the same problem everywhere. You could try reaching out to Safari (Apple) for assistance, since that is bundled into your OS and cannot be re-installed directly. Or, you could start using another browser like Chrome, where you don't experience the problem.

As a Developer for SocialStrata, I can only support our products. And while I may know a decent amount about browsers, I'm not in a position to debug and resolve issues with Safari.

I really hope you can figure out what is going on with your instance of Safari. If you believe this is caused by Hoop.la, I would love to know it, and figure out how to reproduce so that we can figure out why it's happening, but it doesn't sound like that is the case.

Cheers,

Jonmark
