Re-posting of existing content -- need suggestions

Service: Hoop.la

Hi!

I have a community member who has sent me (community manager) a request stating that she does not want her content (usually topics) re-posted by other members.  Recently, one member in particular, has been re-posting this person's content.  The "re-poster" gives credit to the original poster and also notes that it's a repost.  We don't currently have anything in our community guidelines stating that content should not be re-posted.  I don't see a problem in re-posting content in a positive way and giving credit to the original poster, but I wanted to see if others have experienced this, and if so, how it has been handled.

Thanks!

Serena

Hi, Serena:

I'll be interested to hear if other community managers have dealt with this. I have not, as most people in my communities are happy to have the information shared (with credit given). Has this member thought about either putting something in her signature about asking permission before reposting her content, or just saying at the end of these posts: "Please don't share without my consent"?

Thanks, Lori.   This person has been a "challenge" and has some quirky personality traits.  I really like the idea of adding something to her signature!!!  I will suggest this to her, and would welcome any other ideas.

Hi Serena,

I haven’t run into this problem as you described it.

I like the idea of suggesting the troubled member -she can add something to her signature. Another approach is to contact the member who is quoting the first one and ask that person to provide a link to the posts to which she wants to refer instead of quoting the text out of context.

One could argue that if someone reposts of the entire post it’s not out of context. However it loses the context of the larger discussion in which it was said.  Posting a link resolves that tension.

Another way to deal with it, is to step out of the way and let the troubled member contact the other one.  I wonder if this issue rises to the level that a community manager has to create a policy or intercede between members.

I understand and appreciate your concern. It is an almost daily struggle for me to maintain a light hand.

Thanks, ST!  Great suggestions!

I agree about preferring for the troubled member to take it up on her own, since it is just one other member who is currently re-posting her posts, but oh well.

I have already suggested that she add a signature to her posts, but if this continues, I'll also reach out to the "re-poster" and ask her to include the permalink to the original post instead of copying and pasting, as she has been doing.

Thanks!

Serena

Hi Serena,

I apologize for the atrocious post above. I was on a new-to-me device without a keyboard, using voice dictation.

I was sorry to hear about the interesting challenge you shared, but happy that you raised the question. I wish we had more conversations about things like that here.

The subject matter and culture of our community may be different from yours. We're musicians using some wonderful gear. We're a walled garden of happy.  Bose Portable PA.  Feel free to take a look around?

What's your community like?
