Questions about Blog notifications, email, images

Service: Hoop.la

Hey Hoop,

When I make a post to our blog, I get an email copy of it.  Who else in our community gets them?  Only those who specifically 'follow' the blog? Or everyone?   When I set the blog post to "premium only" do all premium members get a notification that a new blog post has been made?

When I receive my email copy of the blog post --it does not show any of the images I attached and inserted into the blog post. Instead, the email copy just shows a placeholder image.  Why is that? (I set the blog post to "premium only.")

I don't see the answers in the knowledgebase.

Good morning Neil,

There are a couple of ways that a member would get a email notification about a new Blog Post.

  • Following "New Blog Posts" from their Notification Settings.
  • Following the author, and choosing to be notified about "Blog Posts"

Either way, members will only be notified if they have access to view the blog post.

Hope that helps,

Jonmark

Thx Jonmark,

Is "notify about new blog posts" the default setting in Notifications?

And what about the image placeholder that appears in the email copy of the blog post I receive?? Why wouldn't it show the actual image?  (It would if we were talking about a 'regular' post elsewhere on the site.)

Hello Neil,

I'm not sure what "notify about new blog posts" refers to, since I can't find a setting for that. There is a "New Blog Posts" setting in your Notification Settings within your member control panel, which is the first setting I mentioned above:

Is that the setting you are asking about?

Regarding the image, I'm not sure why the image would not have appeared in your email. Could you forward me the email (jonmark@socialstrata.com), so that I can look at the source and get a better sense what notification it was, and where the image is sourced from? That should allow me to investigate that issue further, and determine if there is a bug or something else going on.

Cheers,

Jonmark

I forwarded you the two emails.

YES....that was the settings panel I was talking about. What's the default setting when someone registers?? To receive blog notifications?

Thanks Neil,

I'm going to dig into those emails in a bit, but to address your question; Your site is configured so that when members register they are automatically subscribed to new blog posts. You can see that in the "New Content Notification Defaults" section at the bottom of your "General Settings", here:

I'll post back when I have more information about those blog posts.

Cheers,

Jonmark

Hello Neil,

The issue with the image is definitely related to the fact that the post is premium, but it's a bit circumspect on why you don't see it in the mail client.

Google caches images and then sources them through their servers, and that process obviously is done as a guest. Since the post is premium, its attachments are likewise premium and thus the guest user, trying to view the image, receives that premium upsell image as apposed to the actual image. Then google takes that cached image and serves it to you.

We will need to look into this further, and decide how best to approach/address this issue in a later release. We'll post back once we have more details.

Cheers,

Jonmark

Thanks for looking into it.  We don't have this problem with images from other premium posts, so it must be something related to the blog module code.
