Would it be possible to change the way the map of members appears on our site? Our main target audience is in Ontario, Canada, so when people see the big map of the US on the members page they get confused.

Thanks,

Emma

Hi Emma-

There is no built-in way to change the perspective on the map currently. Can you provide a bit more detail though about how you would want it to work, though, just so we understand your potential requirements?

If we could get rid of the US map and just keep the global map, that would be great. Previously we were able to zoom in on countries and see more specifically where members were joining from - that was better for us, and it would be great if we could get that function back, but I understand if it's no longer an option.

Hi Emma-

Thanks for clarifying.  We actually have two different maps we use there.  We only show the zoomable Google version if the community is smaller (less than 5,000 members).  The reason for that is that once you get over 5k members, the number of pins makes it harder to interpret the map.

Hi Emma-

It looks like you may be able to remove the US map simply by applying some custom CSS.  One of our developers came up with this:

#membersPage #bodyContentColumn .responsive-media-container { display: none; }
#membersPage #bodyContentColumn .responsive-media-container ~ .responsive-media-container { display: block; }

Try adding that to your site and see if it works.

Hope that helps!

Thanks, Ted.

Would I just paste this in the Custom CSS box under Display Settings?

(It says "If you wish to add custom CSS for a particular theme only, you should not apply it here, but rather to that specific theme instead" so I'm not sure if it should go somewhere else)

Thanks, Ted - it worked. The US map is gone now.

Would it be possible to still show the zoomable Google version of the larger map? Apparently we paid to have that feature expedited and it has been really useful to our members and for our reporting purposes (since we are a province-specific network we need to report how many members are in-province and how many are from others provinces/countries)

Hi Emma-

At the time of the feature expedite, you were beneath the limit and the feature expedite itself clarified that there would be a member limit.

The primary issue here is performance... once you get above a certain number, the process to render the map can take longer and can impact the overall responsiveness of your site.  And we simply have not load-tested beyond 5,000 members, so the impact is unknown to us.

We'd be happy to increase the limit for you, so long as you understand that it may negatively impact overall performance of your site (again, depending on how many times users actually look at those maps, which may be negligible). We'd also want to add some wording to your contract that covers us in case this causes increased downtime for your site (since you are covered by an SLA).

With all of those caveats, the cost to increase your limit to 10,000 members (so you can still use the Google zoomable map up to those levels) would be a one-time fee of $500 (it's a relatively simply customization).  If you'd like to proceed with that, please let us know.

Thanks!
