Enhanced Alerts - what exactly is an "On-site alert"?

Service: Hoop.la

Please explain the Enhanced Alerts bit about the latest release, a bit more than what your blog post said

What counts as an "on-site alert"?
Is there any way to control what we get alerted about? (Not seeing it in the notifications spot, other than the on/off button...

Okay, I'll admit it...  I do like getting an alert when someone likes my stuff, but I really don't want to get an alert every time someone joins the site (which seems to be one type of on-site alert.) I'm already getting the emails about these folks (which I have my email program automatically set to put these into their own folder so I never need to look at them, except for the rare instance when I do need to.)

Just trying to know how cluttered my alerts will become!

Hi Carol! The alerts are those same format you used to be able to get, which only show up in your web interface under Notifications.

The big change is that we added more things that you can get alerts for. To see your Notification settings, look for the tab that says "primary notifications" at the top of the notification settings page. That's where you can narrow down the things you get alerts for.

I had seen that list but which setting turns off the alerts about new community members? And which one turns off alerts about new posts and replies? I still want to receive the emails about these events but not be bothered by an alert.

Could use more documentation.

(And I'll admit to being curious: Who was this "feature" designed for? Help me understand; who would want all these alerts?)

Hi Carol,

On the Notification Settings page, you can choose Email and/or On-Site Alerts for your Instant Notification Delivery Methods. Sites that support a mobile app will also see mobile push notifications as an option.

Then, on Primary Notifications, anything that you enable Instant Notification for will be delivered to the Instant Notification Delivery Methods that you selected in your Notification Settings. There is no way on a per-notification basis to enable/disable on-site alerts or email. They're either on for all, or off for all.

which setting turns off the alerts about new community members?

In your Primary Notifications under Administrative EventsNew/Moderated Members is the option that controls being notified of new members. If you enable Instant Notification for it, then you'll get notified on each of your selected Notification Delivery Methods.

which one turns off alerts about new posts and replies?

This depends on which content type you are talking about, but there are a few settings that impact this:

  • Email me whenever someone posts to any content I specifically follow.
  • The per-content type notifications such as New Blog Posts and New Surveys.
  • Each content type also has a setting to allow you to subscribe to all new replies/comments within that module (e.g. All Blog Post Comments).

I still want to receive the emails about these events but not be bothered by an alert.

As mentioned above, it's all or nothing: you'll either need to enable alerts for all of your selected notification options or none of them.

Who was this "feature" designed for? Help me understand; who would want all these alerts?

Many people would ask the same question about emails. Hoop.la gives you the flexibility to choose whether you want an email each time Hoop.la needs to notify you and/or whether you want an on-site alert each time Hoop.las needs to notify you. Previously, the alerts feature was a neglected feature in that there were very few useful alerts the system would send you. Now, the alerts feature has been brought up to par with email notifications so that you can receive an alert for any type of notification Hoop.la supports.

Hope that clears things up!

Brian

Thanks for the colorfictation Brian.

You know what would be a NICE addition to this feature?

A "Dismiss the Alert" button next to each alert.

Hi Neil,

The alerts will naturally drop off the list after a week, so there's no option to dismiss the alerts manually. Note that all alerts are considered "read" once you load the alerts page, as well, so that will reset your unread alert counter. New alerts will have a bell icon displayed next to them to indicate they are new.

Hope that helps!

Brian

Hey again.

After having lived with it for a while, I believe the new "Alert" thing needs changed for this reason:  On the Community Menu Bar it mashes the Private Message alert with other types of alerts (somebody has replied to a topic I'm following, etc.)   In the past, it told me IF and how many PMs I had waiting, which was very helpful.

Whereas, with most non-PM Alerts, we have already seen the email notification about it and dealt with it.

What would be nice is if there was an option in NOTIFICATIONS to select "alerts for PMs only."

Example of the options I'm suggesting:

[CHECKBOX]  Alert on Community Menu for Private Messages Only
Instant Notifications will be available on the site for PMs only.
[CHECKBOX]  Alerts on Community Menu for all PMs and Other Information
Instant Notifications will be available on the site for all PMs and other types of activity you are following.

Hi Neil,

The unread PM badge count "notification" is unaffected by your alert settings. It will always appear, no matter what. It sounds like perhaps you should just remove Alerts as a default notification delivery method so you stop getting alerts, which I think will achieve what you are looking for? To do so, just go to Notifications and remove On-Site Alert as one of the Default Notification Delivery Methods. At that point, you may still have unread alerts that were delivered previously, so you'd just need to visit the Alerts page for those to clear. Then, you won't receive on-site alerts any longer, which it sounds like is exactly what you want.

Regards,

Brian
