Why I Quit Facebook

Re: Configuring Social Sharing buttons (which ones, and where they are visible)

Jonmark Weber ·
Hello ST, In order to hide the share buttons for specific social networks you will need to use CSS to prevent them from displaying. I would recommend that you use your browser's inspector to find the ID of the button you would like to hide so that you can base your CSS on that. For example, the Facebook share button is a link (a element) with an ID of "shareOnFACEBOOK". You mentioned potentially restricting it so that it hides for certain content types or shows for certain content types. If...

Re: Configuring Social Sharing buttons (which ones, and where they are visible)

ST ·
Thank you Jonmark. This is great information. Someday it would be nice to configure this kind of thing in the Control Panel at the group level. Is there an easy way to identify what group I'm in with CSS? I'd like to apply the rules by group if possible. I've done some things with sessionStorage, but I'd prefer not to have to write and maintain more JavaScript to deal with the Social Sharing buttons. Thank you, ST

Re: Configuring Social Sharing buttons (which ones, and where they are visible)

Jonmark Weber ·
Hello ST, I would strongly recommend looking at the classes that are defined on the body of your pages. As I mentioned, Hoop.la includes MANY marker CSS classes on the body which can be used to toggle features or customize the appearance of your pages. For your site, for example, you can see that all pages within the "Bose Pro Portable" group include a " h-page-for-group-portable" class on the body element. Using that class you should be able to use similar CSS selectors to what I provided...

Question

Configuring Social Sharing buttons (which ones, and where they are visible)

ST ·
Is there a place in Hoop.la where I can configure which Social Sharing buttons are presented to members? Can I turn them on/off per module (e.g. On in Forums/ Off in Calenders). Can I do this at the group level? If I have to show/hide the Social Sharing with CSS, what is the CSS ID or Class that I have to manipulate? Thanks, ST

First, let's start with the irony - I just used my Facebook account to post this comment. Its true, FB can and does suck in a lot of ways. It also creates an opportunity for a lot of fake and meaningless interaction. However, it does serve at least one purpose for me in that it does allow me to keep 'light' contact with a lot of people who don't live in my area. Friends from my hometown and friends who have moved. It allows me to keep a sort of dialog open that allows us to easily pickup...

Re: Why I Quit Facebook

Thanks for your comments, James. I don't disagree that Facebook has potential to serve a purpose for keeping in touch. My experience has been that while it has that potential, it doesn't typically play out in practice. I typically have used email/IM for those types of "light" contact, instead. I think that Hoop.la has a lot of the tools that are needed to enable networking and community in an effective way. If you haven't already, I'd recommend you check it out (you can set up a free site to...

Re: 5 key differences between social networks and communities

Soulati ·
Excellent description of the differences. I think perhaps an online community can also be more theme oriented, right? A mission, cause, program, objective or some such? Which at the end of the day continuously helps my further clarity about Hoop.la. Slow on the uptake, and I'm not sure why I am! Time...take the time to learn thoroughly, Jayme. Yep.

Social Network Integration Changes

Jonmark Weber ·
As many of you know, we recently migrated all Hoop.la sites to SSL . One consequence of switching to SSL is that some Social Network integrations may need to be updated. This is due to OAuth callback URLs which are registered for each Social Network and are used to validate the authenticity of requests made through the various APIs that enable these features. Since each Hoop.la customer controls their own Social Network integrations, you must fix the issue if it applies to your site. If you...

Re: Filtering out the Noise

Lori ·
I've been using my earbuds the last couple of days, because of this road construction noise, and it helps. On Facebook, I hide the game posts as they come up, that way I can keep it to the "nuggets". The only problem is that there's no way to do this on the phone app, so I have to log on via computer occasionally to fix this. I'm a bit surprised the iPhone app doesn't have a facility for this, but maybe they will in a future version.

Re: Filtering out the Noise

Oh Rosemary! What a wonderful blog. Very honest and heartfelt. I've never done a social network site... and increasingly I'm glad I don't get tied up in the white noise that people seem to have to deal with. I like a simple existence. I like to be in control of anything I say or post. This isn't a puff piece for LC as some may see it, but I'm comfortable here... and I know it's a social network site too!

Re: Page titles

Jonmark Weber ·
In the control panel under CP -> Eve -> Display -> Settings, and then on the Wordlets tab you will want to customize the XSL_POWERED_BY_EVE wordlet. This wordlet is only used for the title of pages and allows you to customize this to your hearts content. Once you have updated the value you will need to invalidate your sites page cache if you want the change to appear everywhere immediately.

Sounds like a LiveCloud Channel is what you need, based on how much you want to spend. We are introducing a whole bunch of new plan options for LiveCloud Channels in the next couple of weeks, but basically you can have forums + blogs + clips (photos and videos) + chat events + custom pages for a fixed monthly fee that is quite reasonable. I'd suggest waiting until we roll out the new plans. We can also import your forum data; however, it is not an automated process currently so we'd have to...
