3 things Star Trek teaches us about Social Media
As a life-long Trekker, I've always found that the wisdom of Kirk stands the test of time.  Star Trek can even teach us lessons about social media, if we only listen.

1. Don't be (or hang around with) the red shirt guy.
He always dies. In social media, the "red shirt guy" is the character you've never seen before who comes out of nowhere and takes over the episode...er...conversation.  He seems to know what he's talking about, but 30 minutes later, he'll be gone, never to return. Don't be a social media "flash in the pan."

2. Tribbles are cute but annoying.STTroubleTrib
Sure, everyone loves to pet furry, purring creatures. But Tribbles have a nasty habit of proliferating out of control.  Yes, I'm talking about social media doodads (badges, games, toolbars). It's best to focus on the ones that serve your overall goal and leave the rest with Cyrano Jones.

3. Be decisive and action oriented, but it's OK to get advice.
Captain James Tiberius Kirk didn't get to his position by whining, reading self-help blogs, and waiting for someone else to tell him what to do.  He made a decision and acted. All the strategizing in the world isn't going to help you if you're never ready to take action.  But remember, although Kirk was decisive, but he always had Spock and Bones there at his side, ready to offer a different take on the situation. There is a lot of good information out there; fill your head every day with outside perspectives.  Find your Spock and listen to him before you go off half-cocked on those Romulans.
