Facebook has recently changed their OAuth authentication requirements by enabling “Strict Mode” for all consumers. What this means, is that if your community is using Facebook as a linked Social Network, then that integration with Facebook will no longer work until you have met their requirements.

For all site owners who have not integrated Facebook as a Social Network for your members, please allow your eyes to haze over and move on with your day. Perhaps throw on some music and get a snack. For everyone else, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you have some work to do.

Thankfully, the requirements to fulfill “Strict Mode” are pretty simple! If you log into your community and access the “Social Networks” configuration page under “Basics” in your control panel, you should find the details you need.

The popup in Hoop.la is necessarily vague about where the “Valid OAuth redirect URIs” value goes, because Facebook often changes their App/Product management, and so we have stopped trying to chase their settings. The following description is accurate at the time of this article being posted, but if you are reading these words many months from now, I apologize if Facebook has once more shifted things around on you.

Specifically, you must specify the “Valid OAuth redirect URIs” value we provide you in the Facebook configuration popup, into your Facebook App’s “Facebook Login” product, within the “Valid OAuth redirect URIs” setting. Once that value has been set, you’re done, and Facebook integration will be working once more.

Thank you for your time and understanding, hope this has helped you sort through these recent Facebook changes.
